StrAU Institute of Smart Materials and Technologies is formed as a wide subject research and academic consortium with the potential for a flexible arrangement of interdisciplinary teams and Master’s programs. The target model of development includes creation of the technological cluster with the university playing the leading role in research and findings and further establishment of the market sector of new materials and functional electronics and technologies for their application for the Russian and international industry, including the markets of the National Technological Initiative being created.
To achieve this target, the next step of organizational design and development will be creation of the Institute of Advanced Technologies of New Materials which will unite areas of technologies for industrial sensorics, chemical and additive technologies to obtain and apply the advanced construction materials (alloys and superalloys, polymers, ceramic materials, high-energy materials, and metal powders) and processing of renewable raw materials, technologies of theoretical and computer material forecasting and design. The model of the institute includes flexible cooperation of existing divisions (laboratories, centers, faculties, and departments) that provides training of engineers and paying market services in R&D. The key network partners of the Institute are CERN, The Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the University of San Paolo, Hiroshima University, the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics, Donostia International Physics Center, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Saint Petersburg University, and National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute”. ISMT will allow to teach the required amount of staff for the fast-growing technological companies and industries of the TechNet market.
StrAU ISMT is aimed at solving the tasks of “smart” materials and technologies development with the following creation of the products for new markets TechNet (http://www.nti2035.ru/technology/technet), AeroNet, AutoNet, SafeNet, and EnergyNet on this base. StrAU is a united research and education media, which will provide the basis for multi-level system of training (Bachelor, Master, PhD, Doctor Degrees) as well as for fundamental and applied research on developing new smart materials, technologies for their production, as well as constructions and systems based on these materials. In this case the complete cycle of research is being realized: predicting the characteristics of new materials and technological processes on the basis of mathematics and computer modeling with the following transition to the smart materials synthesis, complex experimental theoretical research of structure and properties of the obtained materials, optimization of the modes of additive technologies for producing items and constructions based on smart materials, and further transfer of the developments to the skilled professionals of partner enterprises.

TSU has the necessary competences in these areas, which provides international competitiveness in educating high-skilled professionals working in producing the materials of new generation including those with hierarchically organized structure for developing new breakthrough production technologies. This process will be encouraged by recruiting leading international and Russian experts into the Institute.
The main tasks of StrAU 1 as part of global educational and research agenda and its contribution to solving these tasks: creation of multi-level system of education (Bachelor, Master, PhD, Doctor Degree) aimed at accelerating the cycle of developing new materials and technologies and cheapening the final products; carrying out fundamental and applied research in developing new “smart” materials and industrial engineering technologies of creating constructions and systems on the basis of these materials with the participation of the leading Russian and international experts; developing the methods of multi-level mathematics modeling and developing new highly-effective materials, devices and systems with the use of additive technologies for high-tech branches of industry and new markets; increasing educational and research competitiveness of the university on the world level. In the process of its development SMTI is supposed to carve out a niche in nano- and meso-levels of design in the field of producing smart materials and technologies in the world system of research labor division.
The main expected results of the project implementation are:
- the system of the target training of high-skilled professionals for innovation industrial companies based on integration with the leading scientific and educational organizations
- commercialized results of the interdisciplinary research in the field of smart materials and technologies
- infrastructure for implementing a full cycle of technologies for producing new materials and products
- new products for the globally oriented companies and new markets based on the developments in the synthesis of polyfunctional materials, functioning of the systems and additive technologies based on these materials
The core of organizational development will be the financially stable divisions of StrAU in functional electronics and design of new materials and chemical technologies with the potential for transition from the position of developers and producers of the component base to the position of suppliers of technological knots and complex systems and technologies. To do this, it will be required to establish partnership with fast-growing international and Russian technological companies and further develop the existing cooperation resulting in creation a technological consortium for entering the global market as well.
In academia, ISMT consolidates Master’s and Postgraduate programs in advanced technology areas expanding the practical orientation of the program. This will be based on the applied problems within projects with industrials and technological partners. To achieve that, a learning factory will be formed that covers modules of autonomous Master’s programs providing graduates with competencies in Chemical Industry, Computer Simulation, Technology in Chemical Industry, and Computer Engineering of Complex Chemical Systems and Materials. ISMT will allow training of high qualified professionals for growing industries of the National Technological Initiative.
Organizational enlargement in the form of an institute will allow to: form the position of the industrial research and technology center (Center of Excellence) with the leadership potential at the regional and national level of TechNet in functional electronics and semiconductor materials and chemical, additive, and quantum technologies; fundraise to conduct fundamental research, needed for development of breakthrough technologies; provide the home shortage of qualified professionals for R&D center within StrAUs starting to grow; and provide technology transfer and creation of the innovative environment around the university.
